Queens Exhibit: Fourth Friday Closing Reception

Queens Exhibit: Fourth Friday Closing Reception

Join us for Heather Divoky's art show closing reception with a book reading and signing by Virginia Weir.

Heather Divoky is an artist living and working in Wilmington, North Carolina. She has worked in the Arts as a creator, curator, historian, designer, and administrator. Heather’s art has shown in Nashville, the Netherlands, and all over North Carolina. Her primary concern is story-telling through great detail and color. She frequently uses her environment and its history as an inspiration, obsessively researching a subject until she is ready to illustrate it. Divoky works with marker, ink, wire, and stained glass, although she is always trying new media and techniques.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

On a superficial level, the body of work that came together for QUEENS was one of cohesive beauty. I use a combination of wire and illustration to create pieces with mermaids, crowns, and even a Godly figure. I wanted pretty things, yes, but I want to pay tribute to things that negate pretty: the mundane, the broken, and adversity. In each of these pieces, therefore, a message sits for it's intended honoree - largely women, people of color, femmes, trans, and gender non-conforming communities. This was particularly important, as the content for this show was heavily influenced by the space itself, the Athenian House.

It's imperative that spaces like this, which welcome marginalized voices of creativity, are not only available but celebrated. I hope my work adds to the celebration by focusing on the message of Athenian House. I hope that despite the things we go through, we are able to find safety in one another, and beauty in hardship, and inspiration in remembering the queens that came before us.

Heather's workshop will be a multimedia project, where we will focus on celebrating life achievements and/or finding the positivity within ourselves and affirming these celebrations by creating our own wire crowns.

The critical question will be: 'What makes you empowered? What have you done in your life that you are proud of?' In art terms, folks who attend the workshop will learn to work in wire as well as embellish said wire with paper.

$5 fee for materials to paid at the time of event (cash or card)

Allyship Workshop

Allyship: It's more than safety pins and t-shirts. It's more than lip service.

Sunday July 15th at 6pm, join us the Athenian House for a panel discussion and round table about allyship, community building, and ways allies can work to support organizations and spaces working to uplift marginalized voices.

What are appropriate and positive ways to support and advocate for the disenfranchised? How can allies support the marginalized and organizations serving them? In what ways can advocacy or allyship become harmful and counterproductive? What are current opportunities for allies to get involved in the Wilmington community?

Author Talk Double Feature

This month's author talk is a double feature with Emily Paige Wilson and Munazza Abraham!

Wilmington's own Emily Paige Wilson! Wilson is a UNCW MFA alumni and the author of "I’ll Build Us a Home" (Finishing Line Press, 2018). She has received nominations for Best New Poets, Best of the Net, and the Pushcart Prize. Her work can be found in The Adroit Journal, Hayden’s Ferry Review, PANK, and Thrush, among others. Visit her website at https://www.emilypaigewilson.com/.

Munazza Saalim Abraham is a poet, scientist, and tireless advocate for underserved populations. Munazza uses her writing and her voice as an author and spoken word poet. With pen, volume, and hunger for actual justice, Munazza felt at home in the nonprofit field for the past 5 years. In prior occupations and even as an Employment Counselor at StepUp Wilmington, Munazza has had the pleasure of developing and facilitating empowerment sessions that focused on self-affirmations, prose, and poetry that enable individuals to claim their strength and claim their success. Starting this Fall 2018, Munazza will continue utilizing the arts as an organizing tool that empowers and heals communities through research at the University of Baltimore Maryland (UMBC) as a Clinical-Community Psychology Ph.D. student. With the arts at the center of it all, Munazza's UMBC research interests include developing and evaluating restorative justice and community empowerment models with a focus on low income and previously/currently incarcerated individuals.

Book: Dear Vagina… Forgive Me, is Munazza's first self-published chapbook! It is a collection of 17 poems, monologues, and confessions. "I welcome you to my raw, my ugly, and my “too real”, where I’m sure you’ll feel at home and begin to heal with me. Our minds are powerful beyond our minds’ belief." In Dear Vagina... Forgive Me, Munazza acknowledges that notion with a journey from self-depletion to self-discovery.

*It is available on Amazon.com (paperback or Kindle), Amazon Europe; soon to be distributed to select bookstores, online retailers, libraries, academic institutions, and CreateSpace Direct.  https://www.amazon.com/Dear-Vagina-Forgive-Confessions-cleansing/dp/1717359787/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1527127166&sr=8-1
